My story is one of constant reinvention. I grew up immersed in Imagination. Reading, writing, and reciting were my first loves. When I discovered the 'sleep' button on my bedside radio, I still read, wrote, and recited words, but absorbed something else when I fell asleep and awakened to music every single night...
Deeper musicality found me later. It was a brand new way of being, one that I immediately recognized on a cellular level. Home; new yet familiar.
Years later, I moved from my adopted home of Montreal back to the city I grew up in and became Program Director at CHRW 94.9 FM in London (Canada). Already knowing the deep passion that broadcasting excited in me and observing turntablism on the radio at CKUT 90.3 FM in Montreal, I went straight to the airwaves (conveniently culminating down a hall from my office) at CHRW. I'm a fan of learning by origins, so in 2019, I was hauling reusable grocery bags of vinyl - suitably sized milkcrates are now rare to find - to the radio station for practice in the broadcast room when I caught free time. Thus spawned my radio show, Lunar Rotations.
Lunar Rotations has become an international online meeting space for record connoisseurs, respected DJs and selectors, and an infinitely beautiful community of beings. I curate the music on the show to create an experience for all of us - myself included. It has connected me with some of my role models in DJing, music, broadcasting, and community building, giving me a priceless boost of support and soul connection that I intend to put back into the MoonTribe. You can tap in at twitch.tv/zahrahabib on Thursday evenings and on IG at @lunar.rotations.
The show has also taken life as a live event and community experience. With the help of talented musicians I have connected with in London, Lunar Rotations Live brings the spirit of live, organic jams inspired by the funk, the groove, deep musical pocketeering. These bimonthly events take place in London, Ontario, with every indication of expansion. A few broadcasts have taken place in Toronto and other parts of Ontario.
In another thread, I write, record, and produce audio in my home studio. Voiceovers, audio tours, and my favourite - podcasts. I have produced numerous voice-works for different clients. Such as a documentary podcast for the City of London Music Office, a voice tour of an outdoor art exhibit in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens, and voiced a commercial for my alma mater, McGill University. I am currently in production for my first solo podcast series due to come out in late 2023. Hint: It's about music & visual art.
There's more I could share about my work, but that would be too much writing than I'd like to put here. Hit the contact button below and we can talk about it, or about something entirely different. Thanks for being here.
